Warning signs that replacement is approaching: rust-colored water, rumbling or popping sounds (sediment buildup), water pooling around the base, inconsistent hot water, or a unit that's more than 10 years old and requiring repairs.
Water quality matters. Hard water accelerates sediment buildup and anode rod depletion. Flushing the tank annually and replacing the anode rod every 3–5 years extends service life significantly.
